The position

The Project Manager Unlock Literacy will manage the successful adaptation and implementation of the Unlock Literacy Model in partnership with Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation and Warlpiri communities.

This is a hand`s on role and will require the ability to be flexible and responsive to community’s needs. You will be expected to facilitate activities in community and take responsibility for ensuring WYDAC and WVA staff are confident and competent in delivering activities aimed at supporting literacy development according to implementation plans. The role will support adaptation and implementation across three remote Aboriginal communities, located in Central Australia.

Your role plays an integral part in the organisation, enabling us to support our mission of empowering Australians to create meaningful change for the world’s most vulnerable children and adults.

This is a contract role based in Alice Springs beginning February 2022 through to February 2023.

In addition to this you will:

  • Lead annual participatory implementation planning for the projects considering feedback from stakeholders, team learnings and project design, monitoring and evaluation, as well as quarterly team reflections. 
  • Undertake timely visits to each of the project communities to ensure progress towards project outcomes, stakeholders are appropriately engaged in implementation and community engagement and ownership of development outcomes increases
  • Ensure community leaders and elders are engaged and supported to participate in the adaptation of culturally relevant learning materials
  • Ensure strong safeguarding practices are implemented in alignment with WVA Safeguarding policies, standards, procedures and relevant legislation
  • In collaboration with the Operations Coordinator, manage the project cost centres (creating budgets, reforecasting, monthly budget reports and day-to-day budget management) 
  • Manage various grant budgets to maximise spending of grant funding in line with the donor contract and project annual budget
  • Set the strategic direction for relevant staff to work towards project goals
  • Manage the project data collection system and ensure project staff are collecting and recording monitoring data in line with grant and program requirements and photo permissions are kept

Who we’re looking for 

You will have a high level of engagement and responsibility with the ability to partner and work collaboratively with leaders in the aboriginal community.  

You will also have:

  • An interest and understanding of literacy issues in Australia 
  • Understanding of the cultural, political, economic and social issues affecting Aboriginal people in Central Australia
  • Good understanding of, & firm commitment to, community development processes, gender equity, participatory approaches and development theory
  • Proven success and experience managing a team including mentoring and training staff
  • Demonstrated professional experience working with remote Aboriginal communities in a development context
  • Ability to live in Alice Springs and travel to remote communities at least 10 days per month
  • Experience facilitating community consultations and influencing community participation
  • Experience working with women and children
  • Degree qualification in Education, Community Development, Behavioural or Social Sciences, related discipline or equivalent experience
