The Position

Manage the successful implementation of the Young Mob project according to the Implementation Plan, in partnership with First Nations partner organisations and NSW Department of Education. The project is implemented in the Sydney and Hunter Valley region.

The goal of the project is that Indigenous young people confidently engage with the world and have strong connections with their culture and communities. Working collaboratively with the Programming and Partnering Manager (Youth) this role will also support a gradual transition of project activities to First Nations Partner organisations.


  • Lead participatory implementation planning for the project considering feedback from stakeholders, team learnings and project design, monitoring and evaluation in consultation with the Impact, Partnering and Programming team
  • Develop and maintain relationships with WVA staff and leadership, community members and organisations, schools, NSW Juvenile Justice, facilitators, and Young Mob advisors to implement the project
  • Manage the Young Mob team to successfully implement activities according to the Implementation Plan 
  • Work with the project team, partners and schools to run camps and other extension activities
  • Ensure staff feel a sense of belonging and are well connected to each other, the broader Young Mob team and the Australia First Nations Program in general 
  • Regular visits to project sites are made to ensure; progress towards project outcomes, stakeholder engagement/management and ownership of development outcomes
  • Ensure data is collected and reported on, in line with grant and program requirements
  • Contribute to the development of communication materials (such as newsletters) that enable reporting back to communities and WVA supporters
  • Host visits by donors, ambassadors, board members or WVA advocacy and communications steam to collect communications material to support generation of funds for the project

Who we’re looking for 

We are looking for someone with excellent training, coaching and mentoring skills, who has an understanding of issues affecting youth relating to gender, sexuality, causes of disadvantage and identity.

Your skills and experience will also include:

  • Excellent understanding of the cultural, political, economic and social nature of First Nations life across the Sydney and Hunter Koori community, particularly of Aboriginal youth  
  • Demonstrated experience of achieving practical results working with Aboriginal young people, families, organisations and communities  
  • Successful background in providing team, and project management within complex social and political environments.  
  • Experience with positive youth development models or strengths-based approaches to working with young people
  • Good understanding of, & firm commitment to, community development processes, gender equity, participatory approaches and development theory 
  • Strong communication and reporting skills adaptable to context and driving collaboration
  • Tertiary qualifications in community development, social science and other relevant qualifications

The role requirements of this position require the successful candidate to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
